Laura Kimpton (Artist Statement 2005)
I love giving old discarded objects a new meaning and life. It's remarkable how so many things made 20 to 30 years ago were created with caring hands and craftsmanship. So much today is designed with the 'throw away' mentality. By using recycled objects in my work the art piece begins with a history and personality. The objects often direct me to where I'm heading with a piece.
When I was a full time photographer I would spend my days looking for shots, I was always in 'artist mind'. I loved that. Now that I'm in the world of recycled and found objects, I'm back in full time 'artist mind' again. I'm constantly looking for found objects, or as Kiley and I call them: ground scores. I'm just like an archeologist exploring the American landscape for treasures, my favorite art supplies.
